We are constantly being bombarded with images of mouth watering food through advertisement.
No matter what form of media a person chooses, there are restaurants and food brands that hope to appeal to those pleasure centers in our brains by offering images of flavorful and most often decadent food.
One food company in Charlotte, NC has taken food imagery one step further by also appealing to the sense of smell as well. Their new billboard advertisement has not only a picture of a juicy, mouth watering steak, but also emits the smell of BBQ grilled steak. This new billboard is equip with fans that blow the BBQ steak smell to potential customers on the streets below.
ScentAir Marketing, who provided the technology, has begun providing business with specially designed scents that mimic the products being advertised. They believe that if businesses engage the consumers' sense of smell as well as their eyes, then sales can be greatly increased.
I think this new trend could be met with some opposition because some people could find the odors offensive or have an allergic reaction to them. Also do we really need enticement to eat more?
