What do you get when you take an Atlantic salmon, splice in a gene from a Chinook salmon, plus a gene from an ocean pout?
You get a farm raised salmon that grows twice as fast and can be in your sushi in 16 months instead of the normal 3 years!
AquaBounty Technologies has been trying for 10 years to get their genetically modified salmon approved by the FDA for sale in the USA and they are very close to approval as they have completed most of the safety tests needed for the magic stamp of approval.
The extra genes spliced into the farm raised Atlantic salmon basically just keep supplying the salmon with growth hormone all the time instead of just in warmer conditions. The nutritional aspects of the salmon are unaffected.
If genetically modified salmon are approved by the FDA then this will usher in a new era in the production of meat because it will be the first genetically engineered meat on the market in the USA. This will open the door for the approval of the many other genetically engineered meat projects currently in research and development.
Anytime the subject of genetic modification is brought up fears and opposition abound as the safety of such products comes into question in regards to people's health and the environmental impact these modified species could make. However, on the other side of the coin is the fact that faster growing salmon will consume less resources and have less time to accumulate toxic mercury within their bodies.
